Getting Rid of Emotional Baggage

Fear of rejection, anger, depression, anxiety and worry are some of the emotional baggage that individuals carry around, based on their past experiences. When someone walks around with emotional baggage, they tend to project their negative experiences and fears unto other individuals. Faced with a similar scenario from their past, they assume that the outcome will be the same in the present situation and react accordingly.

Emotional baggage is the emotions/feelings related to past experiences that can negatively influence how we react to situations and/or the life decisions we make. 

So how do we start getting rid of emotional baggage?

Step 1: A Renewing of Your Mind

Start by changing your mindset and speaking positive affirmations over your life. One way is to develop a relationship with God, as he can give you a new way of thinking and a new spiritual mindset, that will refresh/renew your spirit. 

Philippians 4:8 (NIV) states Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.  

Remember that you are an overcomer, so do not be anxious for anything. Think about what is making you angry, anxious or afraid and ask God to calm your fears. He will see you through.

1 John 4:4 (NIV) states  You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

How can I learn to control my emotional response to certain situations?

  1. Take slow deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly.

  2. Count to 10 before responding(count to 50 if you need to)

  3. Focus on God’s word

  4. Pray about the emotional baggage that you are struggling with

  5. Meditate on the word

  6. Fill your thoughts, soul and mind with positive images and affirmations.

  7. Try to maintain a positive outlook at all times, no matter your circumstances. Do not always assume the worse.
